Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team dropped an MIAA match tonight as the Lions fell three sets to one in their home opener to Northwest Missouri. Individual set scores were 14-25, 17-25, 25-21, and 15-25.
The Lions (3-6, 0-2 MIAA) ran into a hot-hitting Northwest (6-3, 2-1 MIAA) squad as the Bearcats hit .378 as a team in the opening set to take care of business and win 25-14.
Northwest won the second set, this time by the score of 25-17, but the Lions hit .220 as a team in the third set and led from nearly start to finish. A kill from Katie Politte tied the set at 2-2 and an attack error on the Bearcats gave the Lions a 3-2 lead in the frame and they wouldn't relinquish. Southern led by as much as 17-9 and Northwest would get as close as 23-21, but kills from Politte and Payton Graves ended the set.
The Bearcats, however, came back and hit .357 in the final set en route to a 25-15 win to cap the match.
Politte led the Lions with 11 kills and nine digs, while Abby Finder had 24 assists in her first game back from a short injury stint. Danielle Severns had 13 digs, while Mikayla Avery had seven digs of her own. Callie Whetstone had seven blocks, while Krishna Merriman added five of her own and the team had 11 total blocks in the match.
The Lions will be back in action on Wednesday night, stepping out of MIAA play for a matchup at Drury. First-serve is set for 7 pm from Springfield.
