Volleyball loses heartbreaker 3-2 at home to Southwest Baptist

Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team had its second-straight five set match, but couldn't pull the win out, losing three sets to two tonight at home to Southwest Baptist. Individual set scores were 26-28, 25-18, 19-25, 25-18, and 5-15.

Southern (3-8, 0-3 MIAA) looked to have the first set in hand on multiple occasions late as the Lions led at 23-22 forcing an SBU timeout, as well as leading again at 24-23, 25-24 and 26-25, but a pair of points late by the Bearcats gave SBU the opening set.

SBU (8-4, 1-2 MIAA) took a 7-5 lead in the second set and led again at 10-9, before a kill from Krishna Merriman tied the set at ten. Two more kills from Merriman gave the Lions a 12-10 lead and Southern wouldn't look back.

The Bearcats took a 7-6 lead in the third set and would lead from there on out to go up 2-1. The fourth set was all Lions as Southern took the opening five points and forced a Bearcat timeout. The lead would be 18-13, forcing another SBU timeout and the Lions scored seven of the final 11 points to take the fourth set and force the fifth and deciding set.

SBU led 8-2 at the turn of the fifth set and wouldn't look back taking the finale, 15-5.

Katie Politte led the Lions with 19 kills and 13 digs. Abby Finder dished out 50 assists, while both Payton Graves and Merriman had 14 kills each. Sydney Wheeler had 13 digs, while Mikayla Avery had a set-high 19 digs.

The match was tied 27 times and saw 14 lead changes.

Southern will be back in action on Tuesday, October 1 as the Lions play host to Central Oklahoma at 6 pm in Young Gym.
