Southern volleyball falls three sets to two in tough match with Missouri Western
Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team lost a hard-fought match tonight as the Lions fell three sets to two to visiting Missouri Western inside Young Gymnasium. Individual set scores were 15-25, 25-18, 29-31, 25-23, and 6-15.
Southern (3-10, 0-5 MIAA) trailed for the entire first set as Western (6-9. 4-2 MIAA) led from start to finish in the opening set.
The Griffons scored the first two points of set two, and led 11-8, but the Lions scored seven-straight points to lead 15-11, forcing a Western timeout. The Lions would lead from that point out to take the set.
Western led 20-13 in the third set, forcing a Lions' timeout, before Southern scored eight of the next nine points to tie the set at 21, forcing a Griffons' timeout. Both teams would trade points, before two MSSU attack errors gave Western the third set.
The Lions took a 9-8 lead early on in the fourth set and held on scoring two straight points to take the set after Western had tied the set at 23.
The Griffons then opened up an 8-2 lead in the final set en route to the match win.
Katie Politte had a team-high 17 kills and she added 13 digs. Payton Graves had 15 kills and five blocks, while hitting .393 for the match. Abby Finder dished out 38 assists and had ten digs, while Sydney Wheeler and Mikayla Avery had 13 and 12 digs, respectively.
The Lions will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as Southern plays host to Lindenwood at noon in Young Gymnasium.
