Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team dropped a three set match tonight at home to visiting 13th ranked Washburn. Individual set scores were 7-25, 17-25 and 18-25.
Southern (3-12, 0-7 MIAA) could not stop the offensive attack for Washburn (16-3, 6-0 MIAA) in the first set as the Ichabods took a 3-2 lead and held on to win the set.
Both teams traded points in set two, before Washburn opened up an 18-15 lead, forcing a Lions timeout. The Ichabods would go on to score seven of the next nine points to close out the set.
Southern led 3-1 in the third set and led again at 8-7, but Washburn tied the set and took a 10-9 lead they wouldn't relenquish. The Ichabods led 15-12 and again 21-15 in the set.
Payton Graves led the way offensively for the Lions as she had six kills and four blocks, hitting .250 in the match. Both Katie Politte and Krishna Merriman had four kills, while Abby Finder dished out 21 assists. Mikayla Avery had 12 digs, while Cheyane Crandall had four blocks.
The Lions open up play tomorrow in the MSSU Invitational. Southern will play Southeastern Oklahoma State at 6 pm on Friday, before facing South Dakota Mines and Arkansas Tech in day two.
