Lions volleyball falls 3-1 at Emporia State
Emporia, Kan. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team had 13 kills from Payton Graves and 12 from Katie Politte, but Emporia State had four players with double-figure kills and the Lions fell three sets to one tonight in Emporia. Individual set scores were 18-25, 25-23, 19-25 and 10-25.
Southern (4-16, 0-8 MIAA) ran into a hot-hitting Emporia State (12-7, 3-4 MIAA) squad as the Hornets hit .364 as a team, including .621 in the fourth and deciding set.
Emporia led from start to finish in the first set as the Hornets hit .375 in the set. The second set saw ten tied scores and six lead changes, and the Lions took a 17-16 lead on a kill from Politte. ESU got to within one at 23-22, but the Lions scored two of the final three points to take the set.
The Lions led 6-5 early on in the third set, but ESU went on a 5-1 run to lead 10-6 and led 22-14 late in the set. Despite the Lions scoring five of the final eight points, the Hornets took the third set.
Despite five tied scores and three lead changes, the fourth set would be all ESU. Southern led 5-4 early on, but a 6-0 run gave ESU a 10-5 lead. The Hornets led 19-8, forcing a Southern timeout and ESU would score six of the final eight points to secure the match.
The Lions will be back in action on Oct. 22, as Southern will play host to Cameron at 7 pm in Young Gymnasium.
