Hays, Kan. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team fell three sets to none tonight at Fort Hays State. Individual set scores were 20-25, 15-25 and 23-25.
Southern (4-18, 0-9 MIAA) was led offensively by Payton Graves as she had six kills and five blocks. Callie Whetstone had seven kills and three blocks, while Abby Finder dished out 26 assists and added two blocks. Kamri Nehls and Danielle Severns had ten and eight digs, respectively.
Fort Hays State (11-12, 2-7 MIAA) hit .255 in the match as Madison Schwartz and Taylor Mares had 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Schawartz added 12 digs.
The Lions scored the first three points in the opening set and led 4-2, but Hays scored three-straight points to take a 5-4 lead. The Lions led 7-6, but Hays took a 9-8 lead shortly thereafter and didn't look back.
Hays took a 7-5 lead early on in the second set and led 16-13 midway through the set. The Tigers went on to score nine of the final 11 points to take the set.
Southern led 5-4 in the final set after a kill from Nai Montano, but Hays tied the set on the next point. The Lions took the lead 11-10 and led 14-13, but the Tigers scored four-straight points to lead 17-14. The set would be tied at 18 and 19, and the Lions would get within one three more times in the set, but Hays scored the set's final two points to take the match.
The Lions will be back in action tomorrow when Southern travels to ninth-ranked Nebraska-Kearney tomorrow at 4 pm.
