Women's Volleyball falls 3-0 at Missouri Western
St. Joseph, Mo. -- It was three close sets thoughout, but the Missouri Southern volleyball team fell three sets to none tonight at Missouri Western. Individual set scores were 22-25, 23-25 and 24-26.
The Lions (4-21, 0-12 MIAA) were led offensively by Payton Graves and Nai Montano as both had eight kills. Montano added a pair of digs, while Graves hit .238 in the match and added two blocks. Abby Finder had 25 assists, eight digs and three blocks, while Dannielle Severns 17 digs and Callie Whetstone added seven kills.
Western (14-13, 7-6 MIAA) was led by Kelsey Olion with 12 kills and Jordon Chohon had 34 assists.
The Lions led 8-7 early on, but Western tied it at eight and went on a 3-0 run to lead 11-8. The Griffons' lead was 18-12, before the Lions went on a run of their own, cutting the lead to just one at 21-20, 22-21 and 23-22. Western, however, scored the final three points of the set to take the set.
Western opened up an 8-4 lead in the second set, but Southern went on a 6-0 run to take a 10-8 lead. The Lions led 15-10, but Western tied it at 16, before a kill from Whetstone made the score 17-16, Lions. Southern led 20-17, but the Griffons went on an 8-5 run to end the set.
Both teams traded points in the third set and it was tied at 18 late after a kill from Montano. Western pushed ahead and led 21-18 and again 24-21, but the Lions tied the set at 24 to force extra points. The Griffons, however, scored the final two points and took the match.
Southern will be back in action tomorrow at Northwest Missouri with a 2 pm first serve.
