Bolivar, Mo. -- Despite two different Lions with double-figure kills, the Missouri Southern volleyball team lost three sets to none today at Southwest Baptist. Individual set scores were 23-25, 21-25 and 13-25.
The Lions (4-22, 0-14 MIAA) were led by Krishna Merriman as the freshman had 11 kills and nine digs. Callie Whetstone had 10 kills and hit .444, while Abby Finder and Sydney Wheeler dished out 22 and 11 assists, respectively. Danielle Severns had 11 digs, while Nai Montano had six kills and digs.
Southwest Baptist (17-12, 6-8 MIAA) was led by Mackynzi Gibson with 11 kills, while Jenna Isaacs added nine of her own.
Both teams traded points late in the first set as the set was tied at 22. SBU scored two-straight points to go up 24-23, but a block from Whetstone and Erin Rice cut the lead to just one at 24-23. SBU, however, scored the final point to take the set.
it was much of the same in the second set as the Lions tied the set at 16 on a kill from Rice. From there, however, SBU scored three-straight points to lead 19-16 and the Bearcats led 21-19. SBU scored four of the final six points to take the set.
SBU scored the first three points of the third set and led 8-4 early on. The Bearcats pushed their lead to 20-10 and scored five of the final eight points to take the match.
The Lions will be back in action on November 12 traveling to Lindenwood. First-serve is slated for 7 pm.
