Southern women finish third at 2012 Southern Stampede

Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern women's cross country team finished third today in the 24th running of the First to the Finish Southern Stampede at a rainy MSSU Cross Country Course. 

The Lions were the top scoring Division II team in the race, trailing just Division I Tulsa and Arkansas. 

Freshman Emily Harris was the top runner for the Lions as she finished 14th in a time of 18:10.14. Junior Rachel Schrader finished 16th in a time of 18:18.18, while senior Marlee Tegenkamp and junior Kaitlyn Belisle placed 26th and 30th, respectively. 

Sophomore Lauren Baehr finished 49th, while Jet Hovis and Cassy Kendrick placed 61st and 65th. 

The Lions scored 115 points as a team, defeating 11th ranked Midwestern State and 12th ranked Pittsburg State as the Mustangs and Gorillas finished fourth and fifth, respectively. The University of Tulsa scored 19 points, followed by Arkansas with 72. 

The Lions will be off a week, but will return to action on September 29 when Southern travels to Stillwater for the Oklahoma State Jamboree.
